Do I Need To Remove Drywall That Got Hit By Sewage?

The Institute Of Inspection Cleaning And Restoration Certification (IICRC) recommends removing drywall that has been by sewage. Sewage contains many different types of viruses and bacteria as well many other contaminants that can pose health risks.

Even if the drywall appears to be dry, there may still be moisture and bacteria present that can lead to mold growth and other issues. You may also have things behind the drywall other than sewage that needs to come out.

If the affected area is small, you may be able to remove the drywall yourself. Make sure to wear protective gear, including gloves, a mask, and eye protection. Use a utility knife to cut away the affected area and put it directly in a garbage bag. Seal the bag and remove it from the property.

It is important to seal the area off from the rest of the room to prevent the spread of contaminants. Make sure you are not spreading sewage or other contaminants around the property.

If the affected area is large or if you are unsure about how to safely remove the drywall, it is recommended to hire a professional remediation company to handle the job.

Any reputable water restoration company should have experience and equipment necessary to properly remove and dispose of contaminated materials. They should also be able to ensure that the affected area is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
